PSYCHO-SPIRITUAL COUNSELING "Probably, as in all metaphsycal questions, both are true: Life is - or has - meaning and meaninglessness. I cherish the anxious hope that meaning will preponderate and win the battle." - C.G. Jung |
The etymology of the word psychology derives from the greek psyche meaning soul and ology meaning study of, therefore originally the word psychology was used to refer to the study of the soul. This included philosophy, religion and scientific empirical models of exploration of this elusive but very real aspect of human (and other) nature.
Psycho-spiritual counseling merges the fields of psychology and spirituality to offer holistic and integral guidance for those seeking alternate emotional, mental and spiritual support from traditional models of counseling or coaching.
I am a non-licensed psychologist* with a Masters degree in East-West Psychology and a certification in Spiritual Counseling focusing on supporting people via psycho-spiritual guidance and counseling. I work with people navigating all stages of life from new motherhood and "good change" to more challenging experiences such as loss and grief.
I have a special interest and focus on witnessing and supporting those who are wrestling with shadow parts of themselves (shadow work): the rejected and repressed aspects of our being such as jealousy, rage, shame. This also includes the parts of ourselves that have been forced to hide or don't feel safe expressing themselves because we were told, perhaps consciously or unconsciously by the overculture (family, society, religious institutions, etc.) to banish them such as creativity, joy, and pleasure.
Most of us are seeking meaning and do not know it is right in front of us: all of our lives have meaning and are worthy and my work is centered around helping people connect to their own sense of meaning and worth which is the source of joy and contentment. I find perfectionism is often in direct conflict with our connecting to the meaning and worthiness of our lives and also plays a role in interfering with shadow work because we don't want to look directly at or see those "unloveable" parts. However, once we expand our capacity to embrace, include, forgive and make peace with all these shadow aspects, we find ananda or bliss in being and are free to evolve and become fully ourselves.
I work with all belief systems (and atheists are welcome!) and cater to your particular belief system and needs. Sessions can be all talk or can incorporate movement, meditation, prayer, active imagination, dreamwork, and journaling or drawing. We will co-create the sessions according to your particular needs.
If you are looking to compliment your therapy sessions with more experiential guidance and support or if you are looking for a non-traditional model of emotional or spiritual care, please reach out via the "Contact" page to schedule a 20 minute complimentary exploratory call to see if this offering would be a helpful fit for you.
Currently my rate is $60 an hour over Zoom (sliding scale available for those in financial hardship).
*Please note: I am not a licensed therapist. If you have a mental health diagnosis, I am happy to work with you in conjunction with your therapist and/or psychiatrist, but not in place of these.
